Owings Mills Landscape Visualization
Fall 1994 - Spring 1995
IATH
PolyTRIM , AutoCAD, Microstation

A large scale landscape visualization of an area near Owings Mills, Maryland.

Rossetti's Studio
Summer 1995
IATH
hand-coded VRML and Form-Z

VRML1.0, created by a CGI script. The model was based on woodcarvings of D.G. Rossetti's studio.

Invisible City
Spring 1996
undergraduate thesis project
perl generated VRML

Site space visualizations, from spider-generated lists of pages (cubes), and acyclic and cyclic links (white and gray lines, respectively, in the third image).

Historical Urban Visualization Prototype
Summer 1996
IATH
Cosmo Worlds

The idea was to associate data (household income, political affiliation) with the various houses.  This was a modeled prototype and wasn't generated from actual data.

Valley of the Shadow CD-ROM Cover Background
1997
IATH / W.W. Norton
USGS data rendered and shaded in Alias/Wavefront

The image I was responsible for is behind on the text on the image shown, and it appears on the cover of the CD-ROM package and booklet.

Dante's Inferno SGML Visualization
Spring 1997
IATH
perl generated VRML from SGML

The lines in this image represent the 34 cantos of Dante's Inferno, and the points indicate individual lines of the poem. The triangular markers represent occurences of tags that were selectable via an HTML form. The resulting VRML world could then be navigated via a VCR widget.

Representational Website Interface
Spring 1997
IATH
Cosmo Worlds

A mix of representational (mountains, islands and a flying carpet) and abstract (data about a website) information.  The flying carpet (not shown) served as a guided tour through the space.

AEP Presentation World
Summer 1997
IATH
Cosmo Worlds

An attempt at using a 3D space for a presentation, unfortunately lost in a disk crash.  Features included text panes and a basic linking structure that obviated the need for free navigation.

WorldChart Presentation Space
Summer 1998
Intervista / Intel Celeron launch
WorldChart / 3DXML / Worldview

Another presentation space, this one showing off a data model generated by Intervista's WorldChart.

3D Website Prototype
Summer 1998
Intervista
3DXML, rendered in Worldview
XML Conference Notes in 3D
Fall 1998
Intervista/Platinum
3DXML, rendered in WorldView
Vizbang Presentation / Demo
Winter 2001
Vizbang Software
IAML rendered in Spark

IAML, Information Architecture Markup Language, is the syntax I created for easily designing spaces like this one (and the previous three, when I was calling it 3DXML).  In this case it's being rendered by Spark, the Direct3D based client that I wrote.

AVS Interview Homework
Winter 2001
AVS (interview)
modified OpenViz/Java example program

A Java based example OpenViz program that I modified to display annotations as part of a long-distance interview with AVS.

Sproing, a knowledge database client
2002
Alexandria Digital Earth Prototype
C++/XML/OpenGL

Sproing is a prototype C++/OpenGL application that reads in a custom XML syntax that describes knowledge spaces. Sproing includes a force-springs algorithm for automatic arrangement of the nodes.

VTP UCSB model
2003
Alexandria Digital Earth Prototype
Virtual Terrain Project - GIS + terrain data

A real-time interactive 3D model of campus. Not shown were modifications that included labels and footprint geometry generated from Alexandria project gazetteer data.

St.Elmo client
Summer 2004
Mark Meadows
C++/OpenGL

St. Elmo is a C++/OpenGL based character animation client, under development for an art piece to be installed at a show in August of 2004.
